Id like to have more contol of what is on the desk top; for instance, I saw no easy way to close the rss reader. I don't use rss so it was annoying. Also, the appbar at the top in some themes was impossible to close. At least it uninstalled easily

Many options are available from context menus in Aston shell. Please, make sure the widgets and panels are not locked - you can do it on the Panels tab of Aston Preferences. Then you can right-click widget's gripper, and delete the widget or add some other widget from the list.
